Jimmy Fortune was born in Nelson County, Virginia, on March 11, 1955. His parents were Dabney Fortune and Odie Fortune.
Before beginning his music career, he attended Nelson County High School in Lovingston, Virginia. His love for music and instruments fueled his passion, leading him to pursue a career in the industry.

Jimmy Fortune began his career in tiny resorts, and it was there that he took a turn for the better. Jimmy had been working as a singer in various resorts and pubs while pursuing his passion for music.
During one of his performances at a local ski resort, Lew DeWitt first heard his voice. This experience had a significant impact on DeWitt’s life.
Lew, the original tenor of the Statler Brothers, had Crohn’s disease and needed a temporary replacement. Fortune auditioned for the band in Nashville in 1982 and became a permanent member when Lew could not return.
Some of Fortune’s notable songs with the Statler Brothers include “Elizabeth,” “Too Much on My Heart,” and “My Only Love.”
Many of the group’s members, such as Don, Phil, and Harold, decided to retire after performing together for 21 years.

They have released three albums named: Brotherly Love (2020), Listen To The Music (2023), and Will The Circle Be Unbroken (2023). On July 8, 2023, a bronze statue of Fortune was revealed in Nelson County, Virginia.
