Childhood & Education
Kayleigh Rose Amstutz was born in Willard, Missouri, on February 19, 1998. Her mother, Kara Amstutz, is a veterinarian, and her father, Dwight Amstutz, manages a Springfield family practice and works in neurological and burn intensive care units. She is the oldest of four children.
As a child, she attended church three times a week and spent some summers at Christian camps. During an interview with Variety in 2023, she mentioned struggling with her upbringing:
“I just wanted to feel like a good person, but I had this part of me that wanted to escape so badly.”
Roan began playing the piano at 10 or 11 and took lessons at 12. When she was 13, she sang “The Christmas Song” for the first time in public at her school’s talent show.
Around 14, she auditioned for America’s Got Talent but was unsuccessful. As a teenager, she began uploading covers to YouTube, attracting the attention of record labels.
She began writing songs as she entered her teen years. She graduated from Willard High School a year early.
During her ‘messy’ music career beginning, Roan missed many of her childhood experiences, including proms and graduations.
Professional Career
In 2015, at the age of 17, Chappell Roan uploaded an original song, “Die Young,” to YouTube. She was signed to Atlantic Records shortly thereafter. In 2017, she released her debut E.P., School Nights.
In 2020, her single “Pink Pony Club” marked a stylistic departure from her early releases and led to her initial rise to fame. That same year, Atlantic Records dropped her.
Following a short break, she released a series of songs independently in 2022. Her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” was released in 2023 through Island Records and appeared on many year-end lists of the best albums of the year.
Although it didn’t enjoy immediate success commercially, the album gained a cult following by early 2024 and was hailed as a “sleeper hit.”
The commercial success of Roan’s album was primarily due to her participation in Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour, at Coachella and Governors Ball festivals, and the success of her follow-up single “Good Luck, Babe!.”
CNN reports that Ran’s performance at Lollapalooza set the record for the biggest crowd ever at the festival. In the mid of 2024, the album climbed the worldwide charts considerably, which peak at number 1 in New Zealand, U.K., and Ireland, and within the top 5 in the U.S. Billboard 200 and Australia.
Subsequently, many of its singles entered several charts for the first time since their release. In September, Roan won Best New Artist at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. She dedicated the trophy to queer and trans people.
