Alan Autry was born on July 31, 1952, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Carl Autry Sr. and Verna Brown. After his parents divorced, his name was changed to Carlos Brown.
By the time he was a year old, his mother and stepfather, Joe Duty, moved the family to California’s San Joaquin Valley, where they worked in agriculture. They lived in various migrant worker camps, harvesting crops like cotton and grapes.
