Andrew James was born on 14 March 1986 in Billingham, Teesside, England, where he grew up with his mother, Eileen Matfin, and his elder sister, Kathryn.

Bell dated American actress Evan Rachel Wood for a year in 2005 after they had met at the Sundance Film Festival.
