Childhood & Education
Kayleigh Rose Amstutz was born in Willard, Missouri, on February 19, 1998. Her mother, Kara Amstutz, is a veterinarian, and her father, Dwight Amstutz, manages a Springfield family practice and works in neurological and burn intensive care units. She is the oldest of four children.
As a child, she attended church three times a week and spent some summers at Christian camps. During an interview with Variety in 2023, she mentioned struggling with her upbringing:
“I just wanted to feel like a good person, but I had this part of me that wanted to escape so badly.”
Roan began playing the piano at 10 or 11 and took lessons at 12. When she was 13, she sang “The Christmas Song” for the first time in public at her school’s talent show.

Following a short break, she released a series of songs independently in 2022. Her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” was released in 2023 through Island Records and appeared on many year-end lists of the best albums of the year.

The commercial success of Roan’s album was primarily due to her participation in Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour, at Coachella and Governors Ball festivals, and the success of her follow-up single “Good Luck, Babe!.”
CNN reports that Ran’s performance at Lollapalooza set the record for the biggest crowd ever at the festival. In the mid of 2024, the album climbed the worldwide charts considerably, which peak at number 1 in New Zealand, U.K., and Ireland, and within the top 5 in the U.S. Billboard 200 and Australia.
Subsequently, many of its singles entered several charts for the first time since their release. In September, Roan won Best New Artist at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. She dedicated the trophy to queer and trans people.
