James Burton Mauney was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on January 9, 1987. His father’s name is Tim Mauney, and his mother’s is Lynne Mauney.

He grows up alongside his sibling, Jessi Proctor. His passion for bull riding became evident at a young age. By his teenage years, he was already competing in local events.

He attended Mooresville High School in North Carolina and balanced his education with his growing interest in bull riding.

Despite the risks involved, Mauney was determined to make a name for himself in the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) circuit.

Professional Life

In 2002, J.B. Mauney won the Southern Rodeo Association (SRA) junior all-around title, and in 2004, the adult all-around title. He joined the PBR in 2005 and, in 2009, the PRCA.

Mauney is known for riding Bushwacker for the full eight seconds, scoring 95.25 points in 2013, and achieving a qualified ride on Asteroid with a score of 93.50 points in 2012.

He switched from a helmet to a cowboy hat in 2013. On November 5, 2016, Mauney became the first bull rider to earn over $7 million.

After struggling in the early 2021 PBR events, he shifted his focus to the PRCA. In July 2021, Mauney stepped away from riding in the PBR to concentrate on the PRCA to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

He successfully qualified for and competed in his first NFR in December of the same year. J.B. Mauney was well on his way to qualifying for the NFR in 2023 when he was bucked off by the bull Arctic Assassin, breaking his neck.

He announced his retirement from bull riding days later. In 2024, Mauney purchased Arctic Assassin, who was retired and moved him to his ranch in Stephenville, Texas.

On February 27, 2024, it was announced that Mauney would return to the PBR as the head coach of the Oklahoma Wildcatters, one of the two new teams for the 2024 PBR Team Series.
