Alan Autry was born on 31 July 1952 in Shreveport, Louisiana. His parents are Verna Brown Carl Autrym. After his parents divorced, Carlos Brown’s name was changed to Carlos Brown when he was a year old.

His age as of 2024 is 72. In California’s San Joaquin Valley, his mother and stepfather, Joe Duty, planted and harvested cotton, grapes, and other crops while living in migrant worker camps around the valley.

Football Career

Autry played quarterback for the Riverdale Cowboys in high school. In his senior year, he played as a second-string tight end at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

In 1976, he started three games for the Green Bay Packers after being selected in 1975. In the end, however, his football career ended when Bart Starr cut him from the team.

As a result, Autry pursued acting in Hollywood and attempted to make a comeback in football in 1979. He represented the British Columbia Lions in the CFL as a player as Carlos Brown.

In 1978, Alan Autry debuted his film “Remember My Name.” In 1981, he met his father, Carl Autry Sr., on location in Shreveport for the film “Southern Comfort” after finding Carl’s name in the telephone book.

Subsequently, he returned to his birth surname, Autry. During his acting years, he struggled with alcohol and drug use, according to a 2007 interview with Pat Robertson’s “The 700 Club.”

Autry and his role in the “In the Heat of the Night” co-star Randall Franks formed Autry-Franks Productions and produced a charity CD called “Christmas Time’s A Comin’.” The CD featured the show’s cast and raised funds for drug abuse prevention charities.

They also released another CD titled “Alan Autry and Randall Franks Mississippi Moon: Country Traditions” in 2013, featuring country, bluegrass, and Southern gospel music with special appearances by music legends.

In 2000, Republican Alan Autry succeeded Jim Patterson as mayor of Fresno. He defeated former mayor Dan Whitehurst. Autry was re-elected for a second term from 2005 to 2009, winning with over 72% of the vote on March 2, 2004.

However, due to term limits, he could not run for re-election. In November 2008, he endorsed Ashley Swearengin, who was elected as the next mayor after him.
